The celebration also gives us hope as we await His second coming. The colors reflect the joy, hardship and drama that mark both the years and days leading up to the birth of Christ as well as the years and days we live through now as we await His return. The 25th square represents Christmas Day or His coming and is marked by gold. The squares are reminiscent of the tiny square doors on my children's wooden advent calendars, where tiny surprises of sweets or toys await their eager fingers each morning of Advent.
